Oral Biopsy
Changes to your oral tissue shouldn’t be ignored. Persistent bumps, lesions, and sores should be examined by a dental professional. Oral biopsies are an important diagnostic tool for oral cancer and other concerning oral health conditions. This surgical procedure collects tissue from the oral cavity. The sample is then examined microscopically to determine a diagnosis.
An oral biopsy may be recommended if:
Persistent inflammatory changes in the oral cavity
Abnormal oral tissue
Bone lesions
Oral cancer signs
An oral biopsy is performed under a local anesthetic to keep the patient comfortable. The dentist will then remove the tissue sample and place it into a sterile pathology specimen jar. The incision site will be stitched up and sterile gauze will be placed on top of the area to stop any bleeding. The dentist will then give the patient their post-op instructions to ensure the area heals quickly.
Once we have the results, we will contact the patient immediately to discuss any follow-up care they may require. If you have any questions about oral biopsies, consult your dentist. We are happy to answer any questions you may have about your procedure.
